Why we built Tallyworks
Most online calculators give you a number and ask you to trust it. We think a number you can check is more useful, so every Tallyworks tool shows the steps behind its answer, a worked example, and where its figures come from.
How we build each calculator
Each tool answers one specific question. We write the formula, test it against hand-worked examples, and publish those examples on the page so you can check them too. Tax calculators estimate annual liability from published rates and the standard deduction, and say so on screen.
Where our figures come from
Tax figures come from official sources such as the IRS, the Social Security Administration, state revenue departments and city tax offices. Each tax page lists its sources and the date it was last reviewed. Craft calculators use standard formulas and common rules of thumb, which we state so you can adjust them for your materials.
Editorial standards
Guides are written to answer a real question completely, with original worked examples. We recalculate every number before publishing, avoid copying other sites, and update pages when rates or rules change.
