How this calculator works
Mean (average): the sum of the numbers divided by how many there are.
Median: the middle number when they are sorted. With an even count, it is the average of the two middle numbers.
Mode: the value that appears most often. A list can have several modes, or none if no value repeats.
Range: the largest number minus the smallest. Numbers can be separated by commas, spaces or new lines.
Worked example
4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42, 8
- Sum 116 ÷ 7 values = mean 16.57.
- Sorted: 4, 8, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42, so the median is 15.
- Mode: 8 (twice). Range: 42 − 4 = 38.
Questions people ask
When is the median better than the mean?
When there are extreme values. Home prices and incomes are usually reported as medians because a few very high values pull the mean up.
Can there be more than one mode?
Yes. If two values tie for most frequent, the data is bimodal and both are modes.
What does the range tell me?
How spread out the data is, though it depends only on the two extremes. Standard deviation is a fuller measure of spread.
What is a weighted average?
An average where some values count more. Multiply each value by its weight, add them, and divide by the total weight, as in a grade where exams count 60% and homework 40%.
