Quick answer: the cleanest way is to convert the table to tab-separated text and paste it into a cell in Google Sheets, which automatically splits tabs into columns. Paste the AI's markdown table into the markdown table converter, click Copy for spreadsheet, then paste into cell A1.

Method 1: Tab-separated paste (most reliable)

  1. In the chat, copy the table's raw markdown (lines with | characters).
  2. Paste it into the markdown table converter.
  3. Click Copy for spreadsheet.
  4. In Google Sheets, click a cell and paste.

Each value lands in its own cell, with no pipes, dashes or bold markers. Several tables at once are pasted one after another with a blank row between them.

Method 2: Split text to columns

If the markdown is already in your sheet with each row in one cell:

  1. Select the column.
  2. Choose Data → Split text to columns.
  3. In the separator menu, choose Custom and type |.
  4. Delete the empty first and last columns created by the outer pipes, and delete the row of dashes.
  5. Use Data → Data cleanup → Trim whitespace to remove extra spaces.

Method 3: Import a CSV

Download the table as CSV from the converter, then in Google Sheets choose File → Import → Upload. This is useful when you want to choose import options, like whether to convert text to numbers and dates.

Copying the rendered table

Selecting the formatted table in the chat window and pasting into Sheets sometimes works. It often also brings fonts and background colors with it. Paste with Ctrl+Shift+V (Cmd+Shift+V on a Mac) to paste values only.

Fix common problems

Numbers stay as text. Values like "$1,200" or "15 %" may not calculate. Remove symbols with Find and replace, then use Format → Number.

Dates appear where they shouldn't. Sheets turns "3-4" into a date. Before pasting, select the column and set Format → Number → Plain text.

Leading zeros disappear. Codes like 02134 lose the zero. Format the column as plain text first.

Hidden characters. If a number won't convert, it may contain a non-breaking space. Clean the text with the invisible character remover, or use =SUBSTITUTE(A1, CHAR(160), "").

Ask for a better format up front

You can also ask the AI: "Give me this table as tab-separated values in a code block." Copy the code block and paste it into Sheets. Check that no values contain stray tabs.

For Excel specifically, see how to copy a ChatGPT table to Excel without breaking it.

A worked example

You ask an AI tool to compare three phone plans and get this markdown:

| Plan | Monthly price | Data | Contract |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $25 | 5 GB | None |
| Plus | $40 | 20 GB | 12 months |
| Max | $65 | Unlimited | 24 months |

Pasting it into the converter and using Copy for spreadsheet gives four columns and four rows in Sheets. Two quick fixes make it usable:

  1. Prices: select column B, use Find and replace to remove "$", then set Format → Number → Currency.
  2. Data: "Unlimited" stays as text, which is fine; if you want to sort by data, put a large number in a helper column.

Now you can sort by price or add a formula such as cost per GB.

Importing tables directly with formulas

Google Sheets can also split pasted text with formulas, handy if the markdown sits in a cell:

=SPLIT(A1, "|")

This breaks one markdown row into cells. Copy the formula down for each row, then delete the alignment row and empty columns. It's slower than the converter but works without leaving Sheets.

Keeping headers and formatting

  • Freeze the header row: View → Freeze → 1 row.
  • Turn it into a table: select the range and use Format → Convert to table to get filters and column types.
  • Bold markers: the converter removes the double asterisks markdown uses for bold, so add formatting in Sheets if you need it.

Multiple tables in one answer

AI answers sometimes contain two or three tables. The converter pastes them one after another with a blank row in between. If you'd rather have each on its own sheet, download the Excel file, which puts each table on a separate sheet, and import it into Google Sheets with File → Import.

Common mistakes

Pasting into the middle of existing data. Pasted tables overwrite cells to the right and below. Paste into an empty area or a new sheet.

Leaving the dashes row. The |---| row becomes a row of dashes. Delete it if you split the table yourself.

Trusting the numbers blindly. AI-generated tables can contain errors. Check important figures against the source.

Quick checklist

  1. Copy the table's markdown from the AI answer.
  2. Convert it and use Copy for spreadsheet.
  3. Paste into an empty area of the sheet.
  4. Fix numbers, dates and leading zeros.
  5. Freeze the header row and convert to a table if you'll sort or filter.
  6. Check important figures against their source.

Questions people ask

How do I paste a ChatGPT table into Google Sheets?

Convert the markdown table to tab-separated text and paste it into a cell. Sheets splits tabs into columns automatically.

How do I split a markdown table in Google Sheets?

Use Data → Split text to columns with a custom separator of |, then remove the empty outer columns and the row of dashes.

Why do my numbers paste as text in Google Sheets?

They may include currency symbols, units or hidden characters. Remove them, then format the column as numbers.

Can Google Sheets split a markdown table with a formula?

Yes. =SPLIT(A1, "|") splits a markdown row on the pipe character. Fill it down, then delete the empty columns and the dashes row.

How do I put each AI table on its own sheet?

Download the converted Excel file, which puts each table on a separate sheet, and import it into Google Sheets.

Why are my pasted table columns misaligned in Google Sheets?

A row probably had a missing or extra cell. The converter pads ragged rows so every column lines up.
