Markdown Table to Excel Converter

AI tools write tables in markdown, using pipes and dashes. Paste one here to download it as an Excel or CSV file, or copy it in a format that pastes straight into spreadsheet cells.

“Copy for spreadsheet” uses tabs, so it pastes straight into Excel or Google Sheets as cells.

How this calculator works

The converter finds every block of lines containing pipe characters, skips the dashed alignment row, and splits each line into cells.

Bold markers and inline code backticks are stripped, and rows with missing cells are padded so every row lines up.

Excel download puts each table on its own sheet. CSV download includes a byte-order mark so Excel opens accented characters correctly.

“Copy for spreadsheet” produces tab-separated text, which Excel and Google Sheets paste into separate cells automatically.

Worked example

A comparison table from a chat

  1. Input: “| Plan | Price | Users |”, “|---|---|---|”, “| Basic | $10 | 1 |”, “| Team | $25 | 5 |”.
  2. The converter detects one table with three columns and three rows.
  3. Download Excel and the table opens with Plan, Price and Users as headers in separate columns.

Questions people ask

Why does my ChatGPT table break when I paste it into Excel?

If you copy the raw markdown, Excel sees one line of text full of pipes. Copying the rendered table from the chat window sometimes works, but often brings formatting with it. Converting the markdown gives clean cells every time.

Does it work with Google Sheets?

Yes. Use “Copy for spreadsheet” and paste into a cell, or import the downloaded CSV or Excel file.

Can it handle several tables at once?

Yes. Each table becomes its own sheet in the Excel file. The CSV and copy options put them one after another with a blank row between.

Are numbers converted to numbers?

In the Excel and pasted versions, plain numbers are usually recognised by the spreadsheet. Values with currency symbols or units may stay as text and can be converted with your spreadsheet’s format tools.
