How this calculator works
Annual pay is the hourly wage × hours per week × weeks per year. A full-time year is usually 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours.
Going the other way, the hourly equivalent is the salary divided by the paid hours in a year. A $60,000 salary over 2,080 hours is $28.85 an hour.
Per-paycheck amounts depend on how often you are paid: weekly (52 paychecks), every two weeks (26), twice a month (24) or monthly (12). Biweekly and semimonthly sound alike but give different paycheck sizes.
If you are paid only for hours worked and take unpaid time off, reduce the weeks per year. Two unpaid weeks off means 50 weeks.
All figures are before tax. For take-home pay, use one of the local paycheck calculators on this site, which subtract federal, state and local taxes.
Worked example
$25 an hour, 40 hours a week, 52 weeks
- Annual: $25 × 40 × 52 = $52,000.
- Monthly: $52,000 ÷ 12 = $4,333.33. Biweekly: $52,000 ÷ 26 = $2,000.
- A quick rule of thumb: double the hourly rate and add three zeros. $25 × 2,000 = $50,000, close to the exact $52,000.
Questions people ask
How much is $20 an hour per year?
At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, $20 an hour is $41,600 a year before tax, or about $3,467 a month.
How many work hours are in a year?
A standard full-time year is 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks). Excluding ten public holidays leaves 2,000 working hours, though salaried and many hourly jobs pay for holidays.
Is biweekly the same as twice a month?
No. Biweekly pay comes every two weeks, 26 times a year. Semimonthly pay comes twice a month, 24 times a year, so each semimonthly paycheck is slightly larger.
Should I compare job offers by hourly rate?
Compare total compensation: overtime eligibility, paid time off, health insurance and retirement matching can be worth thousands of dollars a year.
