How this calculator works
The calculator starts with your gross salary and subtracts pre-tax deductions: traditional 401(k) or 403(b) contributions and health premiums paid through a cafeteria plan.
Federal income tax uses the 2026 brackets and standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly). Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500, and Medicare is 1.45% of all wages plus 0.9% on wages above $200,000. Traditional 401(k) contributions lower income tax but not Social Security or Medicare; cafeteria-plan health premiums lower both.
DC uses the same standard deduction as the federal return, then applies its own brackets: 4% on the first $10,000, 6% up to $40,000, 6.5% up to $60,000, 8.5% up to $250,000, 9.25% up to $500,000, 9.75% up to $1 million and 10.75% above that. The brackets are the same for every filing status.
Yearly amounts are divided by your number of paychecks. Because this estimates your annual tax rather than reproducing your employer’s withholding tables, a real paycheck can differ by a few dollars.
Worked example
Single, $75,000 salary, paid every two weeks, 5% to a 401(k)
- The 401(k) contribution is $3,750, leaving $71,250 of income for tax purposes.
- Federal taxable income after the $16,100 standard deduction is $55,150, so federal tax is about $6,845.
- Social Security is $4,650 and Medicare is about $1,088.
- DC tax on $55,150: $400 + $1,800 + $985 = about $3,185.
- Take-home pay is about $55,483 a year, or $2,133.95 per paycheck.
Questions people ask
Do I pay DC income tax if I live in Virginia or Maryland?
No. DC can’t tax the wages of people who live outside the District. If you work in DC but live in Virginia or Maryland, you pay income tax to your home state instead, and your employer should withhold for that state.
Does DC have a separate city income tax?
No. DC is both the city and the state-level government, so the DC income tax is the only local income tax. There is no extra county or neighborhood tax on wages.
Why is my DC withholding different from this estimate?
Employers withhold using tables based on your Form W-4 and D-4 entries, which may not match your actual yearly tax. Extra withholding, credits or a second job will all change the figure. Use this as a planning estimate.
Are DC tax brackets adjusted for inflation?
The DC brackets used here have been in place since the 2022 tax year and are not automatically indexed. The standard deduction follows the federal amount, which does rise with inflation.
